BUSINESS ADVISOR

Q. How should I choose an accountant for my business?

A. The right accountant can do more for your business than tax returns. An accountant can provide general business counsel and help you find financing, legal and insurance resources. Given this, it is not surprising that many small business owners view their accountant as their most trusted adviser.

When interviewing potential accountants, focus your questions on three areas:

  • Experience: What is the accountant's expertise? How familiar is this person with issues facing companies of your size and in your industry?
  • Comfort: Does the accountant's personality and business practices mesh with yours? Is their position regarding risk similar to yours?
  • Services: What else can the accountant do for you? Besides taxes, do you need help with financial planning, bookkeeping or “best practices” guidance?
